>log in to commentHey DevHunt! I'm Agustín, building Tiltmeter from Buenos Aires. I kept getting burned by vendors changing their APIs without telling anyone: a field renamed, a number that suddenly comes back as a string. Typed code crashes, which is annoying, but agents are worse: they just read the new response and guess. Tiltmeter learns what each API normally returns and tells you when that changes, in CI, on Slack or straight to your agents over MCP. When something breaks, tiltmeter fix opens a pull request with the change, and leaves the questions it can't answer for you. pip install tiltmeter and the getting started guide runs it against a fake API in five minutes. Would love to hear which API has bitten you the most.
Tiltmeter monitors third-party JSON APIs, detects breaking changes, alerts CI/agents, and auto-generates fix pull requests.
- for
- Developers and teams using external APIs without reliable changelogs, especially those building AI agents.
- pricing
- open source
- license

Key features
- Shape learning — Observes real API responses to build a statistical JSON schema of fields and types.
- Drift detection — Compares new responses to the baseline and flags breaking, warning, or info changes.
- CI/Slack alerts — Fails CI jobs and sends alerts via Slack or webhooks with a concise change summary.
- Auto-fix PRs — Opens a pull request with code updates after an agent adapts to the new schema.
- MCP integration — Provides has_drifted, get_schema, and other calls for LLM agents to query before trusting data.
- GitHub Action — Runs Tiltmeter in CI, caches baselines, and exits with codes indicating drift severity.
Use cases
- Fail CI builds when a partner API changes its field types
- Alert Slack when an internal service adds or removes JSON fields
- Automatically generate a PR to rename a renamed field in code
- Validate API responses before an LLM agent acts on them
- Detect latency regressions or content-type changes in production

- Tiltmeter vs Postman: Postman focuses on designing and testing APIs with manual specs, while Tiltmeter learns contracts from live responses and auto-generates fixes.
- Tiltmeter vs Insomnia: Insomnia is an API client for manual exploration; Tiltmeter continuously monitors drift without user interaction.
- Tiltmeter vs Better Stack: Better Stack monitors uptime and incidents but doesn’t detect JSON schema changes; Tiltmeter adds drift detection.
- Tiltmeter vs Grafana: Grafana visualizes metrics; Tiltmeter records API shape changes and alerts on breaking drift, not just performance metrics.
Tiltmeter FAQ
How does Tiltmeter learn the API contract?+
It calls the endpoint, records the JSON body, and aggregates types, field frequencies, and categorical values from the last successful checks.
What happens when a breaking change is detected?+
Tiltmeter can fail the CI job, send a Slack/webhook alert, and optionally open a pull request with code updates.
Can Tiltmeter be used with APIs that have no OpenAPI spec?+
Yes, it learns the contract directly from real responses, so it works with undocumented or undocumented-by-vendor endpoints.
Does Tiltmeter send any request data outside my machine?+
No, all data stays locally in a SQLite file; only environment variable placeholders are expanded at request time.
How does Tiltmeter integrate with AI agents?+
Through an MCP server exposing has_drifted, get_schema, get_changes, and other calls that agents can query before trusting a response.
What CI systems are supported?+
Tiltmeter provides a GitHub Action and can be run in GitLab CI or any cron-based workflow.
