Why convert WebP to PNG
WebP is what most websites serve now, so the images you save from a browser often end in .webp. Every current browser shows them, but plenty of other software still does not: older image editors, some slide and document tools, upload forms that only accept PNG or JPG, and print services.
PNG is the safe target when you want to keep the image exactly as you see it. It is lossless and keeps transparency, so logos, icons, stickers and screenshots come out the same. For photos where file size matters more than perfect pixels, convert to JPG instead, which is much smaller.
What happens to quality and size
A WebP file is either lossless (VP8L) or lossy (VP8). Your browser decodes it to pixels and the tool writes those pixels into a PNG, which is lossless. So:
- Lossless WebP to PNG: identical pixels, and the file usually grows a little.
- Lossy WebP to PNG: identical to what you see, artefacts included, and the file often grows a lot, because PNG has to store every detail of a photo exactly.
- Transparent WebP: the alpha channel is copied as is. Turn on "Fill transparency" to put the image on a solid colour.
Each row shows the size before and after, so you can see the growth before you download.
Some sites serve WebP from a URL that ends in .png or .jpg, so a saved file can be named image.png and still be WebP inside, which is why some apps refuse to open it. The tool reads the first bytes of every file, shows the real format, and flags a name that does not match.
Convert WebP to PNG on the command line
Google's libwebp ships dwebp, the reference decoder. It writes PNG by default:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
# every .webp in the folder (bash)
for f in *.webp; do dwebp "$f" -o "${f%.webp}.png"; done
# ImageMagick 7
magick image.webp image.png
magick mogrify -format png *.webpIn code, with Pillow or sharp:
# Python
from PIL import Image
Image.open("image.webp").save("image.png")
// Node.js
import sharp from 'sharp';
await sharp('image.webp').png().toFile('image.png');Animated WebP files
WebP can hold an animation, like a GIF. A browser canvas draws a single frame of an animated image, so this tool saves that one frame as a still PNG. To keep every frame, use ImageMagick (magick anim.webp anim.gif), or split frames into numbered PNGs with magick anim.webp frame-%03d.png.
Going the other way? PNG to WebP shrinks images for the web. To embed a small PNG in CSS, use image to Base64. More on DevHunt: design tools.

FAQ
How do I convert WebP to PNG?+
Drop the .webp files on the box above or click it to choose them. Each one is turned into a PNG in your browser in a moment; click [download] next to a file, or "Download all as .zip" for the whole batch.
Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?+
No further quality is lost: PNG is lossless, so it stores exactly the pixels decoded from the WebP. If the WebP was saved lossy, its compression is already baked in and the PNG keeps it as it is.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?+
PNG compresses without loss, and WebP was designed to be smaller: Google measured lossless WebP at 26% smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP saves far more. A photo saved as lossy WebP can grow several times as a PNG. Set a max width if you need a smaller file.
Does the PNG keep the transparent background?+
Yes. Both WebP and PNG have an alpha channel, and the tool copies it unchanged. If you want a solid background instead, turn on "Fill transparency" and pick a colour.
How do I save a WebP image from a website as PNG?+
Right-click the image and save it; most sites send WebP, so you get a .webp file. Drop that file here to get a PNG. You can also copy the image in the browser and paste it on this page with Ctrl+V, then click [copy] to put the PNG back on your clipboard.
Can I convert an animated WebP to PNG?+
This tool saves one still frame, because a browser canvas draws a single frame of an animation. To keep the animation, convert to animated PNG (APNG) or GIF with a tool that handles frames, such as ImageMagick.
How do I convert WebP to PNG on a Mac or Windows without a website?+
On a Mac, open the file in Preview and use File > Export with PNG as the format. On any system with libwebp installed, run dwebp in.webp -o out.png. ImageMagick does it with magick in.webp out.png.
