We built Prisma Postgres to give TypeScript and AI apps a managed, production‑ready Postgres that’s wired to the same platform as our Compute hosting. It lets you spin up a free database in seconds, get preview databases per feature branch, and use predictable per‑operation pricing with spend limits. Give it a try!

Prisma Postgres is standard managed Postgres, so any ORM, query builder or Postgres client works with it. You can host your Node.js, Bun or Next.js app right next to it on Prisma Compute, all in one project. It's billed per operation, and paid plans have a hard spend limit, so there are no surprise bills. You also get free preview databases for the feature branches you choose. Start on the free plan, no credit card needed.

  • Free tier with no credit card required
  • Runs next to Prisma Compute in one project

Key features

6 features of Prisma Postgres
  • Per-operation billing — Pay only for the queries your app runs, with hard spend limits to avoid surprise bills.
  • Free preview databases — Automatic preview DB for each feature branch declared in your Composer module.
  • Integrated app hosting — Host Node.js, Bun or Next.js apps next to the database on Prisma Compute in one project.
  • Standard Postgres — Full PostgreSQL compatibility; you can export with pg_dump and use any client or ORM.
  • Daily backups & compliance — Paid plans include daily backups and encryption, with GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 on higher tiers.
  • Query insights — Built-in UI shows latency, slow queries and operation counts without extra tracing tools.

Use cases

  • Spin up a disposable preview database for each pull request.
  • Run AI-driven agents that need fast, type-safe Postgres access.
  • Deploy a full-stack TypeScript app with database and compute in a single repo.
  • Migrate a local Postgres instance to the cloud using pg_dump/restore.

  • Prisma Postgres vs Neon: Neon offers serverless Postgres but separate hosting; Prisma bundles DB with compute and preview DBs.
  • Prisma Postgres vs Supabase: Supabase provides Postgres plus auth and storage, but requires separate deployment; Prisma integrates app hosting.
  • Prisma Postgres vs Railway: Railway lets you deploy apps and databases together but lacks per-operation billing and built-in preview DBs.
  • Prisma Postgres vs Render: Render offers managed Postgres and app hosting but does not provide automatic preview databases per branch.

Prisma Postgres FAQ

Is Prisma Postgres free to use?+

Yes. The Free plan costs $0, requires no credit card and includes 200,000 operations per month across up to 50 databases.

What happens when I reach the Free plan limit?+

Databases stop accepting queries until the allowance resets or you upgrade; you can temporarily lift the limit for 24 hours from the Console.

Can I create a database without signing up?+

Yes. Run `npx create-db` to get a temporary Postgres instance instantly; claim it later to move it into your workspace.

Does Prisma Postgres support pgvector?+

Yes, on all plans. Enable it with `CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS vector;` and store embeddings in vector columns.

Are backups included?+

Daily automatic backups are included on paid plans (7-day retention on Starter/Pro, 30-day on Business). The Free plan has none.

Which regions are available?+

Six regions: us-west-1 (SF), us-east-1 (N. Virginia), eu-west-3 (Paris), eu-central-1 (Frankfurt), ap-northeast-1 (Tokyo) and ap-southeast-1 (Singapore).
