JPG to PNG converter

• You will edit the image again. Every JPG save compresses again and loses a bit more. Work in PNG and you lose nothing more after this step.
• A form or tool asks for PNG. Some app stores, icon generators and design tools only take PNG.
• The image is text, a chart or a screenshot that someone saved as JPG. PNG stops the artefacts from getting worse as it is passed around.

If you just want a smaller file for a website, PNG is the wrong direction. Use the image converter to save as WebP or AVIF instead.

The one thing this conversion cannot do is add transparency. The JPG had none, so every pixel in the PNG is opaque. The tool shows the PNG over a checkerboard, so you can see that the background stays solid.

mogrify writes the new files next to the originals and leaves the JPGs in place because the format changes. On Windows, Paint can open a JPG and save it as PNG with File > Save as.

• Set a max width above the tool if the photo is larger than you need. Halving the width cuts the pixel count, and roughly the PNG size, by about four.
• Phone photos are rotated using their EXIF orientation before saving, so they come out the right way up.
• For a PNG to embed in HTML or CSS, run the result through image to Base64.
