What to do if Claude is down

  • claude.ai, the Claude API and Claude Code are listed separately; one can be down while the others work.
  • Retry with exponential backoff on 429 and 5xx errors instead of hammering the API; most short incidents clear within minutes.
  • Keep a fallback model from another provider (directly or through a router such as OpenRouter) behind a feature flag, so you can switch without a deploy.
  • Check the components list: the chat app, the API and single features (images, audio, fine-tuning) often fail separately.
  • Queue non-urgent jobs (batch summaries, embeddings) and replay them once the status page is green again.

Where is the official Claude status page?+

https://status.claude.com. It’s run by Claude itself and lists each component, open incidents and past incidents (it also covers Anthropic, Claude API, Claude Code). DevHunt reads its public status API; nothing here is added or guessed.

Claude isn’t working for me, but the status page says it’s up. Why?+

Status pages update a few minutes after a problem starts, and small or regional issues sometimes never show up. Check your own network, VPN and API keys, try another browser or region, and look at the components list: one feature can fail while the rest works.

What can I use while Claude is down?+

Common alternatives listed on DevHunt are linked below this FAQ. For a long outage, switch the part of your workflow that depends on Claude; for short ones, retrying with backoff is usually enough.

Does DevHunt collect outage reports from users?+
