Disputes and early fraud warnings
The charge succeeds, then a dispute or early fraud warning follows. Submit winning_evidence or losing_evidence to close it.
| Fraudulent (asynchronous) | 4061 2199 4639 3810 | Use this card for most test cases. With default account settings, the payment succeeds, and Stripe creates a fraudulent dispute shortly afterward, rather than during the payment request. This sequence more closely reflects live-mode behavior. This type of dispute is protected after 3D Secure authentication. |
| Fraudulent (synchronous) | 4000 0000 0000 0259 | With default account settings, payment succeeds, and Stripe creates a fraudulent dispute during the payment request. This type of dispute is protected after 3D Secure authentication. |

| Smart disputes | 4000 0000 0100 0043 | With default account settings, charge succeeds, only to be disputed as a Smart Disputes eligible dispute. |
| Partially refunded dispute (asynchronous) | 4000 0084 0000 0795 | The payment succeeds without automatically creating a refund or dispute. If you partially refund the payment, Stripe asynchronously creates a fraudulent dispute for the amount that isn’t refunded. For example, refunding 3 USD of a 10 USD payment creates a 7 USD dispute. Fully refunding the payment doesn’t trigger a dispute. |

How to use a test card
- Use your test keys (sk_test_..., pk_test_...) or a sandbox. Test cards never work with live keys.
- Enter the number, any future expiry date (12/34) and any CVC: 3 digits, or 4 for American Express.
- Enter any name and postal code. To make a postal code or CVC check fail, use the fraud cards and fill the field in.
- For an independent scenario, use a different card: state from one test (like a saved card) can carry into the next.

FAQ
What is the Stripe test card number?+
The default one is 4242 4242 4242 4242 (Visa). Use any future expiry date, such as 12/34, any 3-digit CVC and any postal code. It succeeds without 3D Secure. The other numbers on this page simulate other brands, countries, declines, 3D Secure, disputes and fraud checks.
What expiry date and CVC do I use with a Stripe test card?+
Any date in the future and any 3-digit CVC, or 4 digits for American Express. Stripe skips the CVC check if you leave the CVC out, so to test a failed CVC use 4000 0000 0000 0127 and enter a CVC.
Do Stripe test cards work in live mode?+
No. They only work with test API keys (sk_test_ and pk_test_) in a sandbox or test mode. In live mode they are declined, and Stripe’s services agreement forbids testing in live mode with real card details.
How do I test a declined payment in Stripe?+
Use 4000 0000 0000 0002 for a generic decline, 4000 0000 0000 9995 for insufficient funds, 4000 0000 0000 0069 for an expired card and 4000 0000 0000 0127 for an incorrect CVC. Each returns a card_declined (or the listed) error code your code can handle. 4242 4242 4242 4241 fails the Luhn check and returns incorrect_number.
How do I test 3D Secure in Stripe?+
Use 4000 0000 0000 3220: 3D Secure must be completed for the payment to succeed. 4000 0000 0000 3055 supports 3D Secure but doesn’t require it, and 4000 0084 0000 1629 is declined after authentication. They work with Payment Intents and Setup Intents, not when you create a payment in the Dashboard.
How do I test a dispute or chargeback?+
Charge 4000 0000 0000 0259: the payment succeeds and a fraudulent dispute is created. Stripe recommends 4061 2199 4639 3810 for most cases because the dispute arrives a little later, like in live mode. To close it, submit the text winning_evidence or losing_evidence as dispute evidence.
Are these real credit card numbers?+
No. They pass the Luhn checksum so forms accept them, but they aren’t linked to any account and only Stripe’s test environment understands them. Other processors publish their own test numbers.
